Predatory Mite (Hypoaspis/Geolaelaps aculeifer) Reproduction Test in Soil (OECD TG 226)
The Predatory Mite Reproduction Test according to OECD TG 226 is a chronic soil ecotoxicity test designed to assess the effects of chemicals on the survival and reproductive performance of predatory soil mites (Hypoaspis/Geolaelaps aculeifer). These mites are ecologically important predators that contribute to the regulation of soil-dwelling pest populations.
In this study, adult predatory mites are exposed to a range of concentrations of the test substance incorporated into natural or artificial soil under controlled laboratory conditions for a period of typically 28 days. Throughout the exposure, endpoints such as adult survival, reproduction (number of eggs laid), and juvenile emergence are recorded.
The test allows the determination of concentration–response relationships and key endpoints, including the No Observed Effect Concentration (NOEC) and the Lowest Observed Effect Concentration (LOEC) for both survival and reproduction.
This assay provides critical information for assessing the potential ecological impact of chemicals on beneficial soil arthropods, supporting environmental risk assessment and sustainable soil management practices.
