Non-Target Arthropod Testing with the Lacewing Chrysoperla carnea
Non-target arthropod testing with the lacewing Chrysoperla carnea (based on Vogt H. et al., 2000) is designed to evaluate the potential effects of chemicals, particularly plant protection products, on beneficial predatory insects that contribute to natural pest control in agricultural ecosystems.
In this study, adult lacewings and their larval stages are exposed to the test substance under controlled laboratory, greenhouse, or semi-field conditions. Exposure can occur through direct contact with treated surfaces, ingestion of contaminated prey, or interaction with treated substrates. Observations are conducted over a defined period to monitor lethal and sublethal effects.
Key endpoints include survival, reproduction, development, and predatory activity. The data are used to establish concentration–response relationships and to assess potential ecological risks to non-target beneficial arthropods.
This testing provides essential information for environmental risk assessment, helping to ensure the protection of lacewings—important natural enemies of pest species—and supporting integrated pest management and sustainable agricultural practices.
